Culture

The Romanesque Ermita de Santa María de Tiermes is located within the archaeological site and is included in its heritage protection declaration. It was designated a historical-artistic monument by Royal Decree 1748/1982 of 28 May. Its paired columns with double capitals feature plant and figurative decorations.

The Roman remains of Tiermes include an aqueduct carved into the rock, with a 150-metre-long underground passage. Tiermes also has a seating area carved into the rock, which may have served as a theatre, Celtiberian temple or meeting place.

The Museo Monográfico de Tiermes displays weapons, bronze jewellery and pottery from the 6th to 3rd centuries BC found during excavations at Tiermes, as well as Roman remains and medieval pieces. Using information panels, display cases, plinths and models, it explains the history of Termes, the excavation findings and the study of the materials discovered.

The Church of San Cornelio and San Cipriano has a Renaissance atrium with two arches built in 1534. It also preserves four semicircular arches from the former Romanesque portico. A Gothic tower and a Gothic main chapel with a star vault also form part of the church; the rest of the nave dates from the 17th century.

The Atalaya of Montejo de Tiermes stands within the town, is attached to a house and rises more than ten metres high on a rocky outcrop. It was intended to establish line-of-sight contact with the watchtowers of Liceras and the presumed watchtower of Torresuso. A Roman well is also preserved near Montejo de Tiermes.

Near the archaeological site, in the Carratiermes area, there is a significant cremation necropolis with Celtiberian and even pre-Celtiberian burial structures from the Bronze Age, which originated before the 4th century BC. Also nearby, along a section of road between the museum and Valderromán, there is a rock-cut necropolis with more than 40 graves dating from the 9th to 11th centuries.

Nature and Routes

The El Hoyo area is home to a significant colony of griffon vultures that extends along the Río Pedro through the Cuevas de Ayllón area. The El Hoyo route follows the Río Pedro through a striking canyon with lush vegetation in the municipality of Montejo de Tiermes.

A walking tour around Tiermes begins at the portico of the local Ermita and takes approximately two and a half hours. The archaeological site of the city of Tiermes can be reached from Montejo de Tiermes in about ten minutes.

Local Life

Montejo de Tiermes has a public demand-responsive transport service operated by the Junta de Castilla y León on the Valderromán–San Esteban and Pedro–San Esteban routes. It is available on Mondays and on weekdays on Fridays.

Montejo de Tiermes’s main festivities take place in August in honour of San Cipriano. A traditional full-moon celebration is regarded in Montejo de Tiermes as a monthly custom and takes place at every full moon.
