Discover Almarza: Churches, Traditions and Hiking Trails
The parish church of Santa Lucía in Almarza is a Gothic example of Soria's religious architecture; its oldest parts date from the 13th century, and it was expanded and improved in the 16th and 18th centuries.
Almarza can be reached via the N-111 between Soria and Logroño. The Centro Comarcal de Recepción de Visitantes “Serranía Norte Soriana” is a tourist information centre for the surrounding area and has been located in Almarza's former town hall since 2008. Its interactive model identifies the area's cultural and natural resources.
Culture
The other religious buildings also have their own distinctive features. The Ermita de la Soledad, also known as the Ermita de la Inmaculada Concepción, has an octagonal floor plan. The Ermita de los Santos Nuevos dates from the 16th century, is jointly used by Almarza and San Andrés de Soria, and bears the coats of arms of the Marquises of Zafra.
The Casa Palacio de la Familia Montenegro has now been converted into an Aula de la Naturaleza belonging to the Madrid school Colegio Virgen de Europa. Traditional houses with whitewashed walls shape the townscape; at the corners, openings and door lintels, they are reinforced with dressed stone blocks.
Traditions and the Annual Cycle
In even-numbered years, the Arca is kept in San Andrés, and in odd-numbered years in Almarza. El Traslado del Arca is celebrated on 6 January and has taken place since 1329; at around 1:30 p.m., participants make their way to the Canto Gordo boundary point on the road between Almarza and San Andrés de Soria, approximately halfway between them.
The bonfire procession in Almarza follows a route along which bonfires are lit as soon as the procession approaches. On the last Sunday in July, a traditional market takes place featuring food and handicraft products, live craft demonstrations, exhibitions of old objects and performances. Mycological days are held in Almarza in autumn.

The Cañada Real Oriental Soriana and other livestock trails run through the municipality of Almarza and offer opportunities for hiking. The Cañada Real Oriental Soriana is considered an 800-kilometre livestock trail extending as far as the province of Seville.
