Carbonera de Frentes – Landscape, Churches and History

Carbonera de Frentes lies at the foot of the Sierra de San Marcos. The Pico Frentes spur of this mountain range gives the town its distinguishing name and also reflects the geographical character of the municipality. The Arroyo de Zorrabo stream also runs through the area.

Landscape

Its location at the foot of the Sierra de San Marcos directly connects the town's name with a distinctive landscape. The Sierra de Santa Ana, which is classified as a mountain, is also located near Carbonera de Frentes. This makes it possible to clearly distinguish between nature and cultural experiences when planning your visit, without diminishing the individual significance of each destination.

Culture and History

The parish church of Iglesia de San Benito, dedicated to Saint Benedict, is the focal point of the local ecclesiastical architecture. It has a baptismal font with a truncated-cone shape. The church also contains a Romanesque baptismal font carved from a block of sandstone. It has a diameter of 120 cm and is 70 cm high. Carbonera de Frentes also has the Ermita de San Antonio chapel, dedicated to Saint Anthony.

The Arroyo del Ortigal archaeological site lies within the municipality of Carbonera de Frentes. Roman terra sigillata and utilitarian pottery have been found there. Trigocernido, an abandoned settlement, is also located within the municipality. Ontalvilla del Tormo is the farm belonging to Trigocernido.

The Cerro Ontalvilla, with fortifications and ditches, lies near Carbonera de Frentes. Cerro Ontalvilla belongs to a group of Poblados whose size is given as 4.5 to 6 ha. The hill is also classified as one of the fortified Poblados.

The Museo Numantino, a museum, is located near Carbonera de Frentes. The Palace of los Ríos y Salcedo and the Palace of the Counts of Gomara are also nearby; both are palaces. The Yacimiento Arqueológico de Numancia is located there as an ancient archaeological site. Alameda de Cervantes can be found in the same area as a park.

The immediate surroundings also include the Mirador de los Cuatro Vientos and the Mirador de Romera, both viewpoints. Thus, alongside ecclesiastical architecture, archaeology and historic buildings, the area around the town also offers two named viewpoints.

Festivals

In Carbonera de Frentes, a festival in honour of Saint Anthony is celebrated on 13 June. San Benito and Our Lady of the Rosary are celebrated in October. A procession from the church to the Ermita de San Antonio also took place during a celebration in honour of Saint Anthony.
