Casillas de Berlanga and the Ermita de San Baudelio

The Ermita de San Baudelio in Casillas de Berlanga is regarded as one of the finest examples of Mozarabic architecture on the Iberian Peninsula.

Culture

The Ermita de San Baudelio was built at the end of the 11th century. Its nave is arranged around a central column, from which eight horseshoe arches rise like palm branches. In the lower section there is a colonnade with horseshoe arches leading to a hermit's cave. The interior murals are among the most significant surviving ensembles on the Iberian Peninsula. In addition to the hermitage, a rock-cut necropolis contains more than twenty anthropomorphic tombs. The tombs are generally dated to the 11th and 12th centuries; evidence suggests that they were used until the 16th century.

In the village stands the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, a single-nave church with an adjoining building and a sacristy. In Berlanga de Duero, the Centro de interpretación San Baudelio complements a visit to the hermitage with explanatory panels, models and an audiovisual reconstruction of its original appearance.

In the area surrounding Casillas de Berlanga, in Caltojar, the Romanesque Iglesia de San Miguel was built in the first third of the 13th century.
