Alcubilla de Avellaneda: Holiday Apartment, Churches, Springs and Wine Tradition

In Alcubilla de Avellaneda stands the Iglesia de Santa Mª Magdalena, a Renaissance temple built in 1756. An older tower was used as the bell tower during its construction.

Culture and History

In addition to the Baroque high altar, the church has four other altars: that of Santo Cristo, the Virgin Mary, San Sebastián and San Antonio de Padua. The church therefore brings together several historical layers: the 1756 building belongs to the Renaissance, while the high altar is described as Baroque; at the same time, the older bell tower points to an earlier building history.

The Roman road from Osma to Clunia runs through the municipality of Alcubilla de Avellaneda. It is recorded in the Itinerarium Antonini, a Roman document from the 3rd century.

The Ermita del Cristo del Campillo is a rectangular Renaissance temple and was built in 1775 using materials from an older, dilapidated hermitage. Its walls contain Roman funerary steles from the 1st century BC.

The Palacio de los Avellaneda was built in 1575 by Lope de Avellaneda y Delgadillo, a royal favourite, as a summer residence.

The Museo Enológico-Lagar is located in a restored former village wine press that was converted into a museum to preserve and convey the traditional production of wine. This building dates from the first half of the 19th century and was constructed based on models from the Roman era. Thus, the building brings together its traditional use as a wine press, its present-day museum function and the architectural models of the Roman era.

Today, the Guardaviñas is preserved in good condition; it was restored in 2007 after the tradition of vineyard watchmen had been lost in the 1950s.

Landscape and Trails

Alcubilla de Avellaneda has numerous centuries-old holm oaks that are preserved in good condition.

The Ruta de las Fuentes is 13.4 km long and includes 18 signposted and restored springs among the more than 100 springs in the municipality. The fixed length and number of stops give the route a clearly defined structure.

The route passes through rivers and streams, along poplar-lined banks, through cereal fields and vineyards, as well as through forests of holm oaks and juniper trees. Springs, waterways, open fields, vineyards and wooded sections are brought together in a single route description.

Alcubilla de Avellaneda appears on El Destierro with five modes of travel: gravel cycling, hiking, cycling, BTT/MTB and motorised tours.

Opposite the hermitage in the village is a small rest area for travellers on the Camino del Cid.
