Almajano – River Landscape, Architectural History and Customs

The Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol was originally a Gothic church from the 16th century and was built over the remains of an earlier Romanesque temple. Its main altar is designed in the Romanist style and was carved in 1597 by Pedro de Ciarte from Burgos. The town’s history can therefore be read through various architectural forms, periods and named places.

Customs

On the last weekend of August, Almajano celebrates its patron saint’s festival in honour of the Virgen del Rosario and Saint Stephen the Protomartyr. Every year, on the Sunday before Palm Sunday, the Virgen de la Soledad is carried in procession from the hermitage to the church; during her stay in the church, the rosary is prayed and the Salve is sung every day before she returns to her hermitage on the Friday before Palm Sunday.
