Castillejo de Robledo – Castle, Camino del Cid and Vineyards

Castillo de Castillejo de Robledo crowns a hilltop with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape; a steep slope served as a natural defence. The site is the ruin of a medieval castle built exclusively for military use, constructed from the 12th century onwards.

Culture and History

Two towers, several sections of the double enceinte, several gates and a cistern have survived from the castle. The Ermita de los Santos Mártires Vidal y Marcelino is an unusual Romanesque chapel with a rectangular floor plan, a gabled roof and a square apse; its bell gable is almost twice as high as the building. The chapel preserves medieval monochrome wall paintings; some experts suspect pre-Romanesque influences in them. Castillejo de Robledo is traditionally associated with the episode of the Afrenta de Corpes from the Cantar de mio Cid; most researchers locate there the humiliation of the Cid’s daughters by their husbands, the Infantes of Carrión.

Holm oaks and junipers dominate the area around Castillejo de Robledo; among other plants, chamomile, wild tea and mallow grow in the scrubland. On the Way

The vineyards of Castillejo de Robledo belong to the Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero. On the first Sunday in May, Castillejo de Robledo celebrates the Cruz de Mayo with a procession of the Holy Cross through the town.
