Duruelo de la Sierra: Nature, Culture and Holiday Apartments
In Duruelo de la Sierra, the Ruta de las Cascadas II begins in the Santa Marina landscape area. It leads to the Hiedra Waterfall, the Pozas Malas Cave, Los Calderines and the Paraje del Cubo, and ends at Laguna Marigomez.
Nature
Castroviejo is a rocky area in Duruelo de la Sierra whose formations were shaped by the erosion caused by wind, rain, snow and ice. From the Castroviejo viewpoint, the 360-degree panorama extends across the Sierra de Urbión; at the same time, views open up over the first kilometres of the Río Duero. Cueva Serena is a cave formed in the rocks with a waterfall. It can freeze in winter, while it flows particularly strongly during the spring snowmelt.
The change between frozen water in winter and the particularly strong flow during the spring snowmelt shows how differently the same natural feature can appear over the course of the year.
Pico de Urbión reaches an altitude of 2,229 metres and offers views of the mountain ranges of Demanda, Cebollera, Cameros, Moncayo and Cabrejas. Fuente del Duero is regarded as the source of the Río Duero. It lies near Pico Urbión at an altitude of 2,140 metres; from the Peñas Blancas landscape area, it can be reached via the signposted GR-14.
Routes and Mushrooms
The Duruelo de la Sierra B.T.T. area offers three signposted mountain-bike routes with different levels of difficulty. They connect Duruelo de la Sierra with Regumiel de la Sierra, Quintanar de la Sierra and Canicosa de la Sierra. Duruelo de la Sierra is also part of the Pinares de Urbión mushroom-picking area. A permit is required for mushroom picking; it is available, among other places, from the municipal administration and the tourist information office.
The different levels of difficulty create a clear contrast within the mountain-biking options. Together with the mushroom-picking area, this presents active routes and a nature-oriented activity subject to its own permit regulations as two distinct themes.
Culture
The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel is a single-nave church divided into three sections. Its façade preserves three 10th-century windows with horseshoe arches of Mozarabic character. Surrounding the church is the medieval Necrópolis Medieval, which may contain around one hundred graves dating from the 9th to the 13th century.
Getting There
Buses run through Duruelo de la Sierra towards Soria and towards Burgos via Salas de los Infantes.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Duruelo de la Sierra, travellers can compare the details of travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions with their own priorities: the landscape of Castroviejo and Pico de Urbión stands alongside the town's route and cultural themes. This keeps accommodation details and desired travel experiences separately comparable.
