In Yanguas, the view reaches back into the history of the Earth: at the Majadal de Yanguas sites, footprints of sauropods—large herbivorous dinosaurs—were identified, albeit only exceptionally.

Culture and History

The historic ensemble of Yanguas was classified in 1993 as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the “Conjunto Histórico” category. The Castillo de Yangüas is a Moorish fortification made of rammed earth with mortar and lime, flanked by four towers.

The Iglesia Santa María de Yangüas is located in the Villa Vieja district. It was completed in the 16th century and is a Gothic church with a transept and three naves. The church also preserves three altarpieces.

The Museo de Arte Sacro preserves two Romanesque crucifixes. It also preserves a Flemish panel depicting the nursing Virgin and Child.

These four perspectives do not lead to the same impression: the ensemble represents the historic classification of the place, the Castillo its military architecture, the church its sacred space and the museum specific works of art. Traditions and Festivals

Yanguas’s main festivities in honour of the Virgen del Carmen take place from 15 to 18 July. The Feria de Yanguas is also held during this time. In the past, it was a livestock market widely known for sheep farming and the importance of the Mesta.

Because of its merino-farming and commercial past, Yanguas has a historic tradition of muleteers and merchants.

The dates of the main festivities and the former function of the Feria belong to different periods. You can read both as different chronological reference points.

Landscape and Trails

Yanguas is served by an on-demand public transport service on the Diustes–San Pedro Manrique route. The Mirador de San Blas offers spectacular views of the Cidacos gorge and the contact between the Urbión and Oncala geological units.

A 16.7 km route with a walking time of five and a half hours leads through the Diustes beech forest. The combination of distance and walking time helps you assess the tour’s duration.
