Discover Golmayo: Late Gothic architecture, Roman bridge and nature

Golmayo is home to the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, a Hispano-Flemish Late Gothic building dating from the late 15th century. 100 metres east of the town, the two-arch Puente Romano de Golmayo crosses the Río Golmayo.

Culture and history

Fossils from the Los Caños and Zorralbo sites are held at the Museo Numantino de Soria. The Los Caños site has yielded dinosaur and other vertebrate remains from the beginning of the Cretaceous period, approximately 130 million years ago. Zorralbo provides evidence of the presence of Mesozoic vertebrates. Within the municipality of Golmayo, La Cuenca is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Etnológico category.

A visible section of a Roman road lies about 200 metres from the Puente Romano in the direction of Soria. The 60-metre-long section, laid on the rock, is located at the foot of Uxama. A monolithic sandstone sarcophagus, also used as a livestock watering trough, stands at the entrance to Golmayo.

The Museo Numantino is located in the immediate vicinity of Golmayo. The Palace of los Ríos y Salcedo and the Palace of the Counts of Gomara are also nearby. The Mirador de los Cuatro Vientos and Mirador de Romera viewpoints are located in the surroundings of Golmayo. The Alameda de Cervantes park is in the immediate vicinity of Golmayo. The Yacimiento Arqueológico de Numancia archaeological site is located in the surroundings of Golmayo.

Landscape and trails

The landscape around Golmayo includes extensive stands of oaks, holm oaks, pine trees and junipers. There is also shrub vegetation such as thyme, lavender, tea, chamomile, elderberry and mallow. The fauna includes rabbits, partridges and birds of prey such as golden eagles and griffon vultures.

On the Camino Natural Santander-Mediterráneo, after passing under the N-122, the route runs parallel to the riverbed of the Río Golmayo through typical riverside vegetation. The Abejar–Soria stage of this trail reaches a turnoff for Golmayo. The Sierra de Santa Ana mountain range is also located nearby.

Festivals and events

On the first Sunday in August, Golmayo hosts “La Trilla”, a traditional event honouring the work of previous generations. The programme includes mowing, bringing in the harvest, tying sheaves and threshing. On the last weekend of February, the traditional pig slaughter takes place, organised by the Asociación de Vecinos de Golmayo together with the Ayuntamiento de Golmayo.

Golmayo’s summer festivals take place on the last weekend of August. The VII. “Subida al Palillo” was organised by the Ayuntamiento de Golmayo and took place on Sunday, 13 April 2025, from 11:30 a.m., with the start and finish in Golmayo.
