Nature

The wildlife of Espejón includes diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey, hares, partridges, rabbits, wild boar, deer and roe deer. Espejón’s mushroom management area comprises three regulated forest areas covering a regulated area of 459.99 ha. Permits to collect mushrooms in the regulated areas of the Montes de Soria are available from the Ayuntamiento de Espejón.

Culture and Customs

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is one of Espejón’s local architectural monuments. On Whit Sunday, the Virgen Mariestela is carried from the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Espejón to her hermitage. The jota “maristela” or “levadura” is danced by men. Espejón’s patron saint festivities are dedicated to the Virgen de Brezales.

On the night before 1 March, the Marzas are sung through the streets of Espejón at around 1 a.m.; the singers are divided into two groups. For Los Mayos, young men fetch a pine tree that is as large and straight as possible on 1 May, bring it to the village, erect it on the village green and lay it back down on the last evening of May. History

The quarries of Espejón were already being exploited in Roman times. Red jasper and white or beige marble were extracted from the quarries. Espejón is also home to the remains of a fortification at a place known by locals as “Castillo”.

Getting There

From Soria, the road connection to Espejón follows the N-234 towards Burgos and then the SO-P-5212 towards Navas del Pinar and Espejón.
