Abejar: Nature, Architectural Heritage and Regional Festivals

Abejar is surrounded by pine forests and combines this natural setting with architectural heritage, trails and regional festivals. Among its culinary highlights is the Feria de la Trufa de Soria: it takes place in Abejar and is the only single-product fair specialising in truffles in Castilla y León.

Nature and Trails

South of Abejar, the Sabinar extends across the Sierra de Cabrejas. From the Atalaya viewpoint, the Sierras de Cebollera and Urbión can be seen. Along the section of the Camino Natural Santander-Mediterráneo, the Sierra de Cabrejas lies to the right and is included in the Natura 2000 network as a special conservation area under the name “Sabinares Sierra de Cabrejas”.

The Abejar–Soria section of the Camino Natural Santander-Mediterráneo begins at the former Abejar railway station, a third-class station next to kilometre point 0; an Abejar picnic area is also located there. The “El Navazo” route is a six-kilometre circular trail within the municipality of Abejar and begins in the area known as “El Molimiento”. It leads to Alto de la Negraila, from where the Embalse de la Cuerda del Pozo can be seen.

“La Solana” is an eight-kilometre circular trail and begins in the “La Horca” district belonging to Abejar. Part of this route follows a section of the Cañada Real Occidental Soriana, which is still used by the village’s livestock. The different trail lengths provide a clear basis for comparison when planning your day, while the route, views and landscape each offer their own distinctive features.

Culture and Townscape

Abejar’s traditional architecture includes ashlar buildings and conical chimneys typical of Pinariego architecture. The parish church of San Juan Bautista is one of the most representative examples of Sorian Gothic architecture. It has three naves and houses a Romanesque baptismal font.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Camino is a single-nave church dating from the 18th century, with a cruciform floor plan. Together with the parish church and the characteristic chimneys, it reveals the different facets of Abejar’s local architectural history.

Festivals and Traditions

La Barrosa is a ritual combining mythological and carnival traditions in which the entire village participates. The main figures include La Barrosa and two Barroseros. The Fiesta de la Barrosa was recognised as a festival of tourist interest in Castilla y León on 12 February 2025.

The Fiesta de la Barrosa is celebrated on the first Saturday after Shrove Tuesday. Its established connection with Carnival and the participation of the entire village are therefore just as much part of its traditional form as the main figures mentioned above.

Cuisine

Since 2003, the Feria de la Trufa de Soria has been one of the established winter events in Soria; its first edition took place in Abejar. The fair attracts exhibitors, restaurateurs, chefs, canning companies specialising in mycology and the general public.

In the region around Abejar, mycology plays an important role in tourism; among other species, porcini mushrooms, níscalos and king oyster mushrooms can be found there.
