Lugueros: History, Trails and Mountain Landscape
Lugueros makes history tangible through traces that can still be seen: in the early modern period, the village was an important administrative centre; in the mid-18th century, it had three notaries. As many as seven coats of arms have survived.

Culture and History
The traditional mill in Lugueros is a three-storey mill. The medieval three-arch bridge in the centre of Lugueros was recently restored and crosses the river next to a three-storey mill. The bridge in Los Campos de Lugueros dates from the modern period, but rests on Roman foundations.
A carved tombstone has been preserved in the cemetery of Lugueros as evidence of the village’s history, safeguarded over centuries. An extensive local songbook is also part of the traditional cultural heritage preserved by Lugueros.
Trails and Landscape
The Roman road of La Vegarada has both well-preserved and almost vanished sections and is suitable as a hiking route. The path climbs to the clearing of Bustivela; from there, it offers magnificent views of the Lugueros valley and Pico Bodón.
The Lugueros river bathing area is located on the Río Curueño; a weir forms a cool freshwater pool there. A short, easy nature trail begins at Los Arenales on the Río Curueño. The cave can be visited as part of a guided tour and is equipped and illuminated from June to September.
Geographical Location
Puerto de Vegarada is a mountain pass between Castilla y León and Asturias; its Leonese ascent begins in Lugueros. The pass runs alongside the protected Picos de Europa area and offers views along the way.
Nearby is Riopinos, a ski area located on the side facing the Curueño in the Redipuertas area, which is integrated into the San Isidro resort.
Festivals and Traditions
On 14 September, Lugueros celebrates Día del Cristo and a cattle fair.
The chalice of the church in Lugueros is associated with a devout centuries-old tradition. According to it, it was brought to the village by carriers from Los Argüellos after they found it in an abandoned chapel.
Traditionally, children in Lugueros received “Pan de Muyerinas”. It is associated with legendary female bakers who allegedly lived on the mountain of the same name.
Natural Environment
The Los Argüellos Biosphere Reserve comprises three municipalities. Numerous localities are assigned to these municipalities, including twelve called Lugueros.
