San Emiliano combines high-mountain landscapes, hiking trails and cultural attractions in its surroundings. The Babia y Luna Nature Reserve is a representative landscape of the ecosystems of the Cantabrian Mountains. The Puerto de Ventana reaches an altitude of 1,587 metres and offers views of the San Emiliano Valley and the Ubiña Massif. In the snow-covered highlands, Puerto de Ventana provides an environment for winter hiking.
Mountains and wetland
South of Riolago lies Lago Chao, a glacial cirque enclosed by the Penouta rocks and the summit of La Ferrera. It is listed under code LE-03 in the Regional Catalogue of Wetlands of Special Interest. The surroundings of San Emiliano also include the Peña Ubiña peak, the Picos del Fontán mountains, Peña Orniz mountain and Alto de la Cañada mountain.
Culture
In Riolago de Babia (municipality of San Emiliano, León), the square and its surroundings are designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of “Historic Ensemble”. San Emiliano has elegant manor houses such as the House of Don Pío. The Casa del Parque de Babia y Luna is located in the former residential building of the Palacio de Quiñones, a cultural monument dating from the 16th century. The exhibition “Los Secretos de Babia y Luna” presents the special features of the park’s various areas.
Further nature and cultural attractions
On the last Sunday in August, San Emiliano hosts a competition and exhibition show for Hispano-Breton horses. The Las Ubiñas–La Mesa Nature Reserve is located in the surroundings of San Emiliano. The wider regional area around San Emiliano also includes the Parque de la Prehistoria de Teverga museum and Somiedo Natural Park.
When comparing holiday apartments in San Emiliano, you can initially view travel dates, room categories and cancellation policies side by side on booking pages. For planning purposes, nature, culture and hiking can be considered as separate focuses and arranged according to your own travel rhythm. Several interests can be taken into account in parallel. San Emiliano cannot be reduced to a single type of trip: mountain landscape, wetland, hiking trail and historic sites each provide their own highlights. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may therefore be relevant whether the daily rhythm is shaped more by nature, physical activity or cultural visits; these focuses can also be combined.
Other places
At the same regional level, you will find the following other places: Balboa, Cabrillanes, Congosto, El Ganso, La Magdalena, Meroy, Portilla de la Reina and Santa María Del Páramo.
Hiking
The Las Naves–El Panazal hiking trail passes through the pastures of Puerto de Pinos and the Arroyo del Puerto valley. For the long Las Naves–El Panazal hiking trail, return transport should be planned so that the entire route does not have to be walked back.
