Routes and Pilgrimage History

The Camino Natural de la Ruta de la Conquista shares parts of its route with the local Ruta Zofreral. Its final section leads via the Fuente de Santa Olaya spring into the centre of Congosto. The Camino Natural de la Ruta de la Conquista also ends in Congosto at a recreational area in front of the arcades of the Mercado de la Era. The route therefore connects several named stops: the Santuario, the Fuente de Santa Olaya spring, the town centre and the recreational area by the arcades of the Mercado de la Era. The Camino Olvidado runs along the southern part of the Cantabrian Mountains, is considered one of the original pilgrimage routes to Compostela and was already used between the 9th and 12th centuries.

Nature and Landscape

The Zofreral de Cobrana consists mainly of cork oaks, holm oaks and chestnut trees. In 2008, the Zofreral de Cobrana association was founded in Cobrana with the aim of protecting the forest and promoting educational and cultural activities. The Zofreral de Cobrana features botanical walking trails and the Senda Encantada, a theatrical activity that combines recreation with environmental education and is aimed at both children and adults. The Zofreral thus brings together tree species, botanical trails and environmental education as different facets of the same natural area.

Culture and History

The Santuario de la Virgen de la Peña originated from a small 13th-century hermitage located on the Viejo Camino de Santiago, also known as the Camino de la Montaña or Camino Olvidado. The Santuario stands on Monte Turcia above a gorge and offers wide views over El Bierzo. It was reconstructed in 1957. On the last Sunday in May, the Romería to the Virgen de la Peña takes place in Congosto.

The Monasterio San Miguel de las Dueñas in San Miguel de las Dueñas was founded in the 10th century as a Benedictine monastery under the name San Miguel de Almázcara. As a result of alterations carried out between the 16th and 18th centuries, it features a simple Baroque style. The Monasterio includes a Romanesque portal leading to the chapter house and a 17th-century church with a Baroque high altar. The two sacred sites thus present different historical layers side by side: a hermitage and its reconstruction, as well as the monastery’s foundation, alterations, portal, church and high altar.

Water and Golf
