Culture

Santa María del Páramo presents its history in miniature: the Exposición de Miniaturas de Horacio Domínguez displays more than 200 handmade pieces, including carts, agricultural equipment and houses, and conveys the history of agriculture in the Páramo over the past 60 years through miniature versions of agricultural equipment and machinery.

Nature and Trails

The Senda Botánica is a trail approximately 5 kilometres long with five paved starting points and can be used mainly on foot, as well as by bicycle. The Senda Botánica features 332 trees from 53 different species; signs and information boards provide their names and other characteristics. The Senda Botánica is designated as a free circular route.

For a varied daily itinerary, you can choose between different focuses, such as the nature trail, the exhibition and events.

Market and Regional Cuisine

The Mercado Dominical takes place every Sunday throughout the year and has been documented in Santa María del Páramo since the beginning of the 20th century. The market takes place in the Plaza Mayor and the surrounding streets near the parish church; the local shops remain open to the public around market time.

Since 2006, the municipality has held the Jornadas de Exaltación de la Tapa de Ajo on the first Sunday in November to promote this local speciality, which is found almost exclusively there. Around All Saints’ Day, local bars serve Tapa de Ajo as an accompaniment to drinks; it is normally available throughout the winter in most of the town’s bars and restaurants. When planning the timing, the individual November date and the longer winter period can be considered separately.

Festivals and Stages

The Santa María del Páramo carnival celebrations include a large parade on Saturday afternoon with more than 1,500 participants in more than 50 groups. Since 2015, several editions of the Cider Festival have been held in August, organised by the cultural association “La Ceranda”, featuring tastings of cider from northern Spain and other countries.

The Multisectoral and Agricultural and Food Trade Fair of Santa María del Páramo has been held every September for more than 50 years as part of the patron saint’s festivities. At the Festival Internacional de Teatro de Calle Maiz, national and international companies presented performances in the town’s squares and streets in the fields of circus, theatre, dance and magic. The festival originated from a cultural project launched in 2001 and is incorporated into the local festivities in September.

For personal planning, you can consider the seasonal dates and the different types of events separately.

Wellness

León Termal Sport covers 2,000 square metres, including more than 1,000 square metres for a thermal area with various swimming pools, saunas and contrast elements.
