Culture and History

In Santa Colomba de Curueño, history can be read in tangible places: Castillo de San Salvador has been documented since the beginning of the 10th century, specifically since 927. Its remains lie on the left slope of the Curueño River, opposite the village of Santa Colomba de Curueño.

The Ermita de Santa Ana was built on the site of Castillo de San Salvador in the 16th century, incorporating parts of the earlier structure. The Ermita del Santo Cristo stands beside the road and dates from the 17th century. Its distinctive architectural features include a gated exterior portico and a pebble floor.

The parish church of Santa Colomba de Curueño is part of the village’s artistic heritage. It features exceptional wood carvings, altarpieces and ornaments. A fixed date in the annual calendar is the traditional pilgrimage to the Ermita de Santa Ana on 26 July. It includes traditional music, a Holy Mass, and a picnic with bollos preñados and refreshments.

Landscape

The Ruta de La Trapa - Ermita de Santa Ana route begins in Santa Colomba, crosses the river and then climbs uphill along a forest track. The natural surroundings of the village offer additional hiking trails, and cycling is also possible in Santa Colomba de Curueño.

Another named route is the Alto del Sesteadero route. It passes the forgotten site of the Ermita de Santa Elena. Different route options and landscape references give day planning several distinct focal points, from exploring the surrounding area on foot to visiting historical sites.
