Vegaquemada: Church, Río Porma and Local Festivals

Vegaquemada is known for the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, which bears the nickname „Cathedral of the Porma“. The municipality lies along the middle course of the Río Porma, downstream from Boñar. Access is via the C-626 crossroad, which runs from La Robla through Boñar to Cistierna, as well as via the longitudinal P-1, which follows the Río Porma from Puente Villarente to San Isidro.

Culture

The present-day church was built between 1952 and 1954. It stands on the same site as an 11th-century Romanesque church that was demolished in 1952. Its features include stained-glass windows by L. García Zurdo.

Inside, two sculptures are preserved: a depiction of the patron saint from the 16th century and one of the crucified Christ from the 18th century. Another historic site is the Casa de Juntas, or Merindad, which dates from the 16th century.

In the village of La Mata de la Riba, there is a Romanesque apse integrated into the present-day 17th-century church dedicated to Saints Justus and Pastor. The ethnographic features of La Mata de la Riba also include a shoeing stand and three former water-supply outlets.

Festivals

The patron saint festivities in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption take place on 15 August. Traditionally, a vermouth dance is held at the Polideportivo during the patron saint festivities after Mass. On the last weekend of the patron saint festivities, the Junta Vecinal invites the village to a roast lamb meal.

River and Trails

The Vegaquemada / Candanedo / Vegaquemada route begins and ends in Vegaquemada. It crosses the Río Porma several times via two wooden footbridges and a small wooden pontoon. Peña Tobal is a modest-height limestone hill that is symbolically associated with the village. As a circular route, it thus connects its starting and finishing point with several named crossings of the river.

The Coto de Pesca Vegaquemada is located on the Río Porma. Its 7.41-kilometre stretch runs from the Puente de La Mata de la Riba to the Presa de la Central de Lugán; these two points form the upper and lower boundaries, respectively. The kilometre measurement and the boundary points give the river stretch a clearly defined spatial structure.

The route with its wooden crossings and the clearly bounded fishing stretch represent two different ways of experiencing the Río Porma. Together with Peña Tobal, they create a spatial picture made up of the route, the river boundaries and a hill closely associated with Vegaquemada.
