Carucedo: Las Médulas, Lake and Camino de Invierno

Carucedo is a stop on the Camino de Invierno. Las Médulas is a landscape of red, rugged clay formations emerging amid green vegetation. Within a compact thematic area, a historic pilgrimage route, unusual landforms and traces of past use thus come together.

Nature and Landscape

Las Médulas has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The landscape was created through Roman engineering to exploit rich gold deposits; a complex canal system was used for this purpose, bringing water from the Montes Aquilanos over a distance of more than 15 kilometres. The red clay formations are therefore not only a distinctive geological feature, but also represent a historic cultural landscape shaped by technical interventions.

Lake Carucedo forms a wetland inhabited by a diverse range of wildlife and belongs to the ZEPA de los Montes Aquilanos. The circular trail “Las Aves de Carucedo – Lake Carucedo” leads around the lake and offers views of distinctive chestnut trees and a diverse birdlife. At the lake, nature observation, appreciation of the landscape and a clearly defined trail therefore stand alongside one another as independent aspects of a visit.

At Lake Carucedo, there is a wooden walkway with benches and information boards about trails leading to various areas. The existing features organise time spent by the water around observation, short stays and orientation along the trails described, without conflating the lake’s different focal points with those of the surrounding landscape.

Trails and Visiting

The L1-Senda Perimetral lies within the Las Médulas Natural Monument and runs through the municipalities of Borrenes, Carucedo and Puente de Domingo Flórez. In addition to the Casa del Parque de Carucedo, the L1-Senda Perimetral has further access points. Culture and History

The parish church of San Pedro Apóstol in Carucedo probably has Romanesque origins. The parish church of Caduredo in Carucedo contains a piece of silverwork from the 18th century, which is among the most significant of its kind in El Bierzo. Both references broaden the view beyond the landscape: the probable Romanesque origin points to the building’s history, while the piece of silverwork is a specific testament from the 18th century.

The various local references can therefore be understood as separate points of access: Las Médulas combines landscape and Roman history, Lake Carucedo combines wetlands and birdlife, the Camino de Invierno incorporates the town as a stop, and the churches complement these themes with local cultural history.
