Trabadelo – Holiday Apartment on the French Way of St. James
Due to its proximity to Galicia, Trabadelo is part of the French Way of St. James. For pilgrims, the ascent to O Cebreiro begins in Trabadelo. If you assign different importance to different topics when planning, you can explore the town both through its connection to the pilgrimage route and through its architectural and local history. For your own planning, you can consider the route, landscape, and history separately rather than combining them into a single perspective.

History
In connection with the Way of St. James, Trabadelo was repopulated through the establishment of a settlement under Diego Gelmírez, the first archbishop of Compostela. From 895, when it was donated by Alfonso II, until the middle of the 19th century, the village of Trabadelo belonged to the Church of Santiago in Galicia for centuries. The Cerro de Aldares in Trabadelo is associated with Autares; the medieval castle of the Lord of Autares may have stood there, where pilgrims, as at other crossings, were charged a toll. By carefully considering the names, dates, and references to places side by side, you can understand the historical connections step by step.
Routes and Landscape
The Way of St. James passing through Trabadelo follows routes of great scenic beauty. A more strenuous alternative route over the Cerro del Real runs through the countryside. Los Cáscaros can be reached from Trabadelo via the road to Pradela and then in the direction of Sotelo. For your own selection, the details can be clearly distinguished: the Way of St. James passing through Trabadelo represents the described scenic character, the alternative route represents a more strenuous course through nature, and Los Cáscaros represents a separate destination. This keeps the type of route, landscape, and destination distinguishable. The different details do not prescribe a fixed order. You can incorporate the character of the route, the landscape, or the destination individually into your planning.
Culture
The parish church of San Nicolás in Trabadelo preserves a small medieval carved figure of the Virgin and Child; its Baroque altarpiece was created by López de Sisto. The chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción contains an altar and an ara. Sacred artworks and named furnishings provide two aspects for placing the culture in context. You can decide which of these aspects to give priority to based on your interest in art, history, or local traditions. The two cultural focal points can be viewed as different perspectives on Trabadelo. Trabadelo is home to several traditional hórreos, which can be seen locally.
