Discover Reliegos: Trails, Wineries and Cultural Heritage

The Camino Francés has run through the centre of Reliegos towards the walled town of Mansilla de las Mulas since the 12th century. The Roman Vía Trajana, also known as the Calzada de Peregrinos, also runs through Reliegos. Three Roman military roads met in Reliegos. The Codex Calixtinus assigns the town to the eighth stage between Sahagún and León. The various links to the routes can be read as different historical reference points for travel planning.

Archaeology and Townscape

In the La Toza area, there is a Palaeolithic site where a total of 118 different artefacts were recovered from the surface. In the Vallorno area, archaeological remains from the Roman period have been preserved, including a tegula bearing the inscription “Legio VII”. The Palaeolithic finds and Roman remains represent two clearly separate periods within the history of the town.

Reliegos features traditional vernacular architecture made of adobe bricks and rammed earth. This construction style is complemented by wooden supporting structures, a roof made with wattle and daub, and a covering of Arabic tiles. Reliegos is also known for its underground wineries made of brick and earth. Traditionally, wine was stored in them; today, following their restoration, the wineries are used as meeting places.

Church, Symbols and Feast Day

The parish church of San Cornelio and San Cipriano contains Baroque carvings of San Antonio Abad, San Lázaro as a pilgrim, San Cornelio, San Cipriano and Christ. Part of the original structure of the medieval pilgrim hospital in Reliegos has been preserved. The Pendón de Reliegos consists of six red silk strips and two green strips, joined by borders embroidered with gold thread.

For Reliegos, San Isidro Labrador was scheduled for 15 May in 2024. On Sunday, 23 August 2026, part of the suspended ceiling of the parish church of San Cornelio and San Cipriano collapsed.

Nature and Collection

The meteorite to which the recovered fragments belong was found in Reliegos in 1947. The Reliegos meteorite is a stony meteorite, that is, a chondrite. A recovered fragment of the Reliegos meteorite is intended to be included, together with two other original fragments, in the permanent exhibition of the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales.
