Carracedelo: Monastery, Camino de Santiago and Trails through the Landscape

The Monastery of Santa María de Carracedo in the municipality of Carracedelo was founded in 990 by Bermudo II.

Culture and History

The monastery features transitional forms of Romanesque architecture as well as Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements. As a museum site and protected historic monument, it is located in the municipality of Carracedelo on the Camino de Santiago.

A branch of the Camino de Santiago passes through Carracedo Del Monasterio and rejoins the main route at Campo de San Bartolo, at the southeastern entrance to Cacabelos.

The Iglesia de San Esteban de Carracedelo preserves a Romanesque portal and a Romanesque interior door from the 12th century. The Museo Agrícola “El Varal” in Carracedo del Monasterio covers agriculture, bread, slaughtering and wine. The Museo Natura Ibérica displays representative specimens of the wildlife of the Iberian Peninsula.

Hiking and Trails

The Ruta Monasterio–Médulas leads from Carracedo Monastery to Las Médulas and passes through Carracedelo, Villadepalos, Peón de Arriba, Campañana, Carucedo and Las Médulas. It is 21.14 kilometres long in total; the estimated walking time is 5 hours and 30 minutes.

The Ruta Monasterio–Médulas is signposted with information panels, direction signs and marker posts as far as the vicinity of Castrelín at the municipal boundary of Carracedelo.

The Ruta de los Puentes Colgantes is an 11.88-kilometre circular route to the suspension bridges of Villadepalos and Villaverde de la Abadía. The Ruta de la Fruta runs for 10 kilometres through the municipality of Carracedelo and is suitable for walkers and runners of different ability levels.

Nature and Landscape

The Ruta Villadepalos–Peón de Arriba passes through dense stands of strawberry trees, holm oaks, oaks and chestnut trees, as well as individual cork oaks.

At the suspension-bridge section of Villadepalos, also known as the “puente de la barca”, an area has been designated for swimming and resting.

The municipality of Carracedelo is crossed by the Cúa and Sil rivers, which favour lush vegetation and agricultural use.

Local Traditions

The Ruta del Pan y del Vino highlights communal ovens and wine presses as features of Carracedelo’s local identity.

The Casa Rectoral in Carracedelo is a building from the late 18th century with vernacular-influenced Rococo architecture. It serves as the headquarters of the quality designations for Botillo del Bierzo, Pimiento Asado del Bierzo, Manzana Reineta del Bierzo, Pera Conferencia del Bierzo, Castaña del Bierzo and Cereza del Bierzo.
