Espinoso De Compludo – Forest Valley, Trails and Culture

Espinoso De Compludo lies in a deeply cut valley surrounded by lush chestnut, oak and holly forests. The village is a starting point for numerous hiking routes, while also offering views of a densely wooded landscape and traces of history.

Landscape and Trails

The La Igualta hiking route connects San Cristóbal de Valdueza and Espinoso De Compludo. It passes through small oak forests and follows the Arroyo Pequeño for much of its course through the areas of Espinoso and San Cristóbal. The waterfalls of Pontón or Peña Blanca, as well as La Igualta, lie along the route. After passing through Espinoso De Compludo, the Ruta de la Abadía Compludo reaches an elevation of 1,100 metres.

Another route leads from the Herrería de Compludo, via the vicinity of the former Roman mining site of La Miédula, to the centre of Espinoso De Compludo. On the ascent to Puerto del Morredero, a turn-off leads to Espinoso De Compludo; from this turn-off, an unpaved track leads to Compludo. The different routes and the stated elevation provide concrete points of reference for comparing trails and day plans.

Village Character and Culture

The streets in the centre of Espinoso De Compludo are narrow and irregular, apart from the main road. Numerous recesses, bends and projecting parts of buildings encourage the formation of courtyards, corrales and other intermediate spaces. Traditional houses often feature façades with load-bearing stone walls and roofs made of slate slabs; they have external access stairs made of wood or stone.

The Iglesia de San Miguel stands at the southern edge of the village centre. A window and the portal may date from the Romanesque period and were reused during the modern reconstruction. The Molino de Vegamolín is located in the Espinoso De Compludo area at the Vegamolín site, is considered a building of clear cultural and historical value, and is recorded in the 1753 cadastre of the Marqués de Ensenada. Its traditional system is still in operation.

Events Around the Mill

The fourth edition of the Romería al Molino de Vegamolín was announced for 6 June. It revives the former agricultural and milling uses of this special place in the Tebaida Berciana. The IV Romería al Molino de Vegamolín was also scheduled to include a demonstration of the mill in operation using the original granite stones, which experts date to before 1700.

For the third year in a row, Espinoso De Compludo announced a sociable event modelled on the traditional Asturian Espincha. Los Ciclones del Becerril performed at the III EspiNcha Solidaria.
