Cubillos del Sil: Circular Routes, Reservoir Views and Local History
Cubillos del Sil has several circular routes with different trail features. The Senda del Monte Meno is a circular route signposted with blue directional markers, while the Senda del Mirador–Refugio Meno is a circular route signposted with directional markers.
Nature
From the Peña del Cuervo viewpoint, the view extends across a large part of the El Bierzo region. The Mirador del Meno offers a privileged panoramic view of the Bárcena Reservoir.
The Senda de los Túneles is a circular route that passes through a tunnel of the former mining railway. The Senda de los Túneles offers views of the upper part of the Bárcena Reservoir. Along the route by the Bárcena Reservoir, there are picnic areas and shaded places to rest.
Wildlife mentioned in connection with Cubillos del Sil includes the otter, wildcat, roe deer and wolf. The routes can be distinguished by their markings, circular-route character, tunnel passage, views and available rest areas.
Culture and History
The parish church of San Cristóbal has medieval origins and was remodelled from the 16th century onwards. Its altar features a Baroque altarpiece; it also has a vaulted ceiling and a bell façade with a cylindrical bell tower from the 17th century.
The Casa natal de Severo Gómez Núñez is a palace-like house and houses a milestone dating from the time of Nero, which was found in Almázcara.
An important Roman road crossed old Cubillos and was later called Vía Nova, Camino de Santiago and, from the 18th century onwards, the Road of Carlos III or Carretera Vieja. The Camino Olvidado de Santiago, also known as Camino Viejo or Camino de Montaña, was one of the oldest pilgrimage routes to Santiago.
At Castromocho, the fortification wall and ditches on the northern side are clearly visible. Castromocho is a listed pre-Romanesque castro in Posadina that visitors can explore. A chapel near the town hall houses a small altarpiece with an unusual depiction of Saint Roch as a pilgrim.
Events
Cubi-Magia is a recurring street magic event in Cubillos del Sil. The fiestas in honour of San Cristóbal take place in Cubillos del Sil around 10 July, while those in honour of San Roque are held every year on 16 August.
Cubillos del Sil can be reached via provincial road 631 from Ponferrada or Villablino; buses to Cubillos del Sil also run several times a day.
