Valencia de Don Juan: Castle, Museums and Trails along the Esla
Valencia de Don Juan presents its urban and castle history in an unusual setting: the Museo del Castillo de Valencia de Don Juan is located inside the Torre del Homenaje. It is spread over three floors, which present the history of the town and its castle chronologically.
Culture and History
The Castillo de Coyanza was built in the 15th century over an older fortification, which in turn stood on the remains of an Iron Age castro. The terrace on the museum’s third floor offers a different perspective; from there, the views extend across the Vega of the Esla River.
The Museo de la Indumentaria Tradicional Leonesa (MITLE) displays more than 1,200 exhibits. At the same time, it was the first museum devoted exclusively to the study and exhibition of traditional Leonese clothing and jewellery. Its presentation illustrates traditional life in Leonese villages through various aspects of everyday life and the clothing worn on different occasions.
At the Iglesia de San Pedro, architecture combines with remarkable sacred craftsmanship. The neoclassical church, built of stone, has two square bell towers in a purely Herrerian style. The main altar features a large 16th-century altarpiece by Guillermo Doncel. The Iglesia de Santa María houses the 13th-century Gothic image of the Virgen del Castillo Viejo, as well as the 16th-century Panteón de los Condes de Valencia de Don Juan.
Nature and Trails
For trails and landscapes, the starting point is the Camino Natural Vía Verde del Esla: Valencia de Don Juan is its trailhead. In addition to the castle, the Mirador del Esla offers views across the Vega of the Esla River. As a town park, the Jardín de los Patos includes a pond area, a kiosk and an open-air auditorium. A route just over 12 kilometres long leads from Valencia de Don Juan to Castrofuerte and is suitable for hiking and mountain biking.
