Mansilla Mayor: Churches, Monasteries and Lancia

The parish church of San Miguel in Mansilla Mayor was built in the 15th century. Its nave features an impressive Mudéjar coffered wooden ceiling, and it houses a Renaissance altarpiece by Domingo Llamazares.

Culture and Architecture

Santa María de Sandoval is a Cistercian monastery in Villaverde de Sandoval. The monastery was built on land that Alfonso VII had donated in 1142 to Count Pedro Ponce de Minerva and his wife, Estefanía Ramírez. The monastery church has a Latin-cross floor plan with three naves, a transept and semicircular apses. The church preserves 16th-century carvings and painted panels; the tabernacle is designed in the style of Juni.

The church of San Simón has an un gilded altarpiece made of natural wood, dedicated to its patron saint. San Miguel, San Esteban and San Simón thus display different ecclesiastical furnishings, ranging from the Mudéjar coffered wooden ceiling and Renaissance altarpiece to painted panels and natural wood.
