Riaño: Leonese Fjords, Trails and Culture at the Riaño Reservoir

The landscapes in the Montaña de Riaño known as the Leonese Fjords were created after the construction of the Riaño Reservoir flooded deep mountain valleys and sheer rock faces. Nature and Water

During the excursion boat trips on the Riaño Reservoir, passengers can disembark at certain points along the shore to begin hikes and are then taken back to the dock in Riaño. For personal planning purposes, the boat trip and hike can be considered as two separate sections.

The Subida al Pico Gilbo route can be started from Riaño by crossing the viaduct on foot. Alternatively, the starting point is at the car park at the end of the viaduct and at the beginning of the route.

The PR-LE 52 Collado El Baile hiking trail connects at Prado de la Collada with a variant from Las Viescas and Riaño.

The Senda Riaño - Riaño route begins at the access road to the town from the N-621 national road.

Culture

The Iglesia parroquial de Santa Águeda was formerly the San Martín church from Pedrosa del Rey. The church was relocated stone by stone and has a striking 16th-century tower, as well as a replica of a Romanesque portal at the main entrance.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario was also relocated stone by stone from La Puerta; the village of La Puerta was flooded by the reservoir. Its chancel dates from the 13th or 14th century.

The Way of Saint James passes through Riaño via the so-called Ruta Vadiniense.

The Museo Etnográfico de Riaño displays reconstructions of a smokehouse, a traditional forge and a local school.

The Corro de Aluches is a futuristic building. It was constructed in the final decade of the 20th century based on a design by the architect Félix Compadre.

The cultural topics can be distinguished as sacred architectural history, reconstructed everyday life and futuristic architecture.

The annual Feria de Riaño takes place on the first Saturday after 2 November.
