El Acebo de San Miguel on the Camino de Santiago

On the French Way of Saint James, El Acebo de San Miguel is the first inhabited village on this section after Rabanal del Camino. Upon entering the village, the Camino de Santiago passes the Fuente de la Trucha; at the entrance to the village stands the Ermita de San Roque on the Camino de Santiago.

Culture

The Church of San Miguel has a bell gable believed to date from the 16th century. The same church houses a polychrome stone sculpture attributed to Saint James, wearing a tunic decorated with lilies. The pilgrim hospital of El Acebo de San Miguel gained importance in the 16th and 17th centuries.

El Acebo de San Miguel features traditional Bercian architecture with slate roofs and wooden balconies made of oak or chestnut wood. Historically, the inhabitants of El Acebo de San Miguel were exempt from taxes if they erected 800 posts to help pilgrims find their way. The Cruz del Peregrino is associated with the tradition that the patron saint drove away demons troubling the pilgrims.

At the exit of the village stands the monument to Heinrich Krause, a metal sculpture featuring a bicycle, a pilgrim’s staff, a gourd bottle, and a scallop shell, commemorating a German pilgrim who died while cycling on the Camino de Santiago.

The ascent from Molinaseca to El Acebo de San Miguel reaches the village at an altitude of approximately 1,150 m. The Mirador de El Acebo offers views over valleys and mountain peaks.
