Holiday apartment in La Cueta: Sil landscape and cultural heritage
Holiday apartment in La Cueta: Discover landscapes and cultural heritage
La Cueta lies at 1,442 m above sea level, making it the highest village in the province of León. Here, the high-altitude setting combines with a diverse settlement structure, religious buildings, historical traces, and a distinctive landscape along the Sil. When choosing a holiday apartment in La Cueta, these different aspects can provide helpful guidance: you can decide whether your days should focus primarily on hiking trails, churches and hermitages, or the history of the settlement and its livestock routes.
Three districts, bridges, and religious sites
The settlement of La Cueta is divided into three separate districts: Quejo, Cacabillo, and La Cueta. The district of La Cueta can be reached via a stone bridge over the Sil River. For orientation within the area, it is therefore useful to consider the three sections separately rather than viewing La Cueta as a compact, unified settlement. The bridge creates a tangible connection between the district of La Cueta and the course of the Sil.
In the upper part of La Cueta stands the parish church of San Mateo on a hill. Several traditional houses in La Cueta still have a Fornu. Alongside the stone bridge of the same name, some remains of the medieval monastery of Santibáñez have survived; little more than the church’s ground plan can still be seen. The church, traditional houses, and monastery ruins provide the area with various cultural points of interest that can be combined well with a landscape-focused trip.
North of the district of Cacabillo, the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves stands on a hill. The Cacabillo hermitage is one of La Cueta’s attractions. In addition to its high-altitude setting and districts, the settlement therefore offers several religious destinations where the area’s distinctive structure can be experienced.
Hiking between the Sil and Peña Orniz
The Cordel de Babia de Arriba was an important livestock route along which migrating herds travelled from the Cañada Real de la Vizana to the mountain passes and grazing areas of La Cueta and Babia Alta. This historical context adds the history of the routes and pastures to today’s impressions of the landscape.
The Las Fuentes del Sil hiking trail begins and ends in the upper district of La Cueta de Babia. Its route ascends through the Sil valley to its sources on the slopes of Peña Orniz. For hiking enthusiasts, this describes a route connecting the village with the river valley and the higher-lying sources. The combination of starting and finishing in the upper district with the ascent through the Sil Valley makes the route a distinct focus alongside the settlement’s cultural sites.
A series of folds in the landscape can be seen on the right bank of the river near La Cueta, as well as from the districts of Quejo and Cacabillo. This geological structure is also visible from a pass located near Laguna Grande in Lago de Babia. The views of these folds complement the hiking trail with a landscape aspect that can already be taken into account when planning how you would like to spend your holiday.
