Palacios de la Valduerna: Cultural Heritage on the Vía de la Plata

Palacios de la Valduerna connects the Vía de la Plata with preserved buildings, religious heritage and regional festivals. The section of the Calzada de la Plata near Palacios de la Valduerna is included in the procedure initiated in June 2026 to have the route recognised as an asset of cultural interest in the category “Historic Transport Route”. Southeast of the town centre, a section approximately 400 metres long includes remains of culverts, a small bridge and other structural elements extending to the course of the Arroyo de los Molinos. To the east, the route bypasses the town along a presumed section known as Calzada Vieja. History and Culture

The castle of the Señorío de los Bazán is considered to be a 14th-century building. A large corner block and an adjoining section of the wall have survived and are integrated into a private residence. The castle-palace of Palacios de la Valduerna dates back to a royal residence built in the 11th century by King Alfonso V of León. Today, part of the western curtain wall and the tower, which serves as living quarters, remain. From a hilltop, the castle-palace overlooks the valley of the Duerna River.

La Panerica is a two-storey former granary next to the parish church. Its origins date back to the 12th century; today, it houses an exhibition on the history of Palacios de la Valduerna. The La Panerica Museum presents prehistoric and Roman archaeological objects, traditional clothing and various household items. The exhibits also include Palaeolithic axes found within the municipality of Palacios de la Valduerna. La Panerica opened in 2016 on the initiative of the El Embrujo de la Valduerna cultural association.

Religious Heritage

Local heritage sites in Palacios de la Valduerna include the parish church of San Pedro and the Sanctuary of the Virgen de Castrotierra. Residents’ interest in their religious heritage led to the restoration of a Gothic Christ figure. The sacrarium and the canvas of the main altar of the parish church of Santa María were also restored. A project by the University of León aimed to document the cultural heritage of Palacios de la Valduerna in a virtual tour, focusing particularly on the castle, church and chapel.

Routes

The provincial road LE-7401 runs between Palacios de la Valduerna and Tabuyo del Monte. On the Vía de la Plata, La Bañeza is 6 km before Palacios de la Valduerna and Celada is 15 km beyond it. Anyone leaving Palacios de la Valduerna on the Vía de la Plata towards Celada reaches a Roman bridge over the Turienzo in open countryside. Festivals and Music

Poesía para vencejos takes place on the first Sunday in August in the former arms courtyard of the old fortress of the Señorío de los Bazán. The event also includes music, including traditional performances with dulzaina and tamboril. The Pascuas festivities are celebrated annually in Palacios de la Valduerna on the Saturday before Pentecost Sunday.
