Discover Soto de Valdeón

Soto de Valdeón lies beneath the high peaks of the Picos de Europa. The village therefore offers you a scenic setting in which you can observe historic architectural forms, religious architecture and traces of earlier uses at specific sites.

Culture

When considering the hórreos, it is helpful to distinguish between the collection as a whole and the particularly old examples: Soto de Valdeón has a collection of 17 hórreos, traditional storage buildings. Two hórreos are classified as archaic and are more than 500 years old. Of the five archaic hórreos preserved in the province of León, two are located in Soto de Valdeón. The collection thus combines function, age and regional classification within a manageable village setting.

The church of San Pedro Advíncula, dating from the 12th century, stands in Soto de Valdeón. It has a Renaissance altarpiece; its portal features polychrome capitals. The building's age, furnishings and portal design form three distinct characteristics of the same religious building.

The history of the mills is also part of the village's history. In the 19th century, six mills operated simultaneously in Soto de Valdeón, four of them communal and two privately owned. Today, one mill remains in Soto de Valdeón in good condition. The former distribution and current state of preservation thus mark different periods in the history of its use.

Another historic site is the Virgen Blanca hermitage, dating from the 16th century. It is now called Virgen del Carmen and is known in the valley as “La Capilla”. This building allows its original name, current name and local designation to be distinguished together.

The historic sites date from different periods: the church dates from the 12th century, the hermitage from the 16th century, while the six mills represent the village's history in the 19th century. Architectural history, religious sites and the history of use consequently emerge as separate aspects.

Orientation

Soto de Valdeón is one of the settlements in the Valdeón Valley that can be reached from Riaño via the N-625 towards Cangas de Onís and via the turn-off to Puerto de Panderruedas before Puerto del Pontón. You can use this sequence of road, direction, turn-off and mountain pass as geographical guidance when planning your route.

The recreational area of Soto de Valdeón is located in the municipality of Posada de Valdeón on the route between Soto de Valdeón and Caldevilla and has tables and a children's playground.
