Valdevimbre – Wine, Nature and Holiday Apartment

Wine and Culture

At the Museo del Vino de Valdevimbre, the wine tradition lies underground: the museum is located in a traditional cellar winery that was excavated more than 300 years ago.

At Leyenda del Páramo, the offerings include tours of the winery and vineyard, wine tastings, and tastings accompanied by food. The Prieto-Picudo grape variety native to Valdevimbre has been protected by the Tierra de León designation of origin since 27 July 2007.

This means that two different sides of wine culture exist side by side in Valdevimbre: the cellar winery conveys the historical setting, while the winery and vineyard, together with the tastings, show how wine is approached today. The food accompaniment adds another culinary dimension to this focus.

The grape variety itself is also part of the local context. Prieto-Picudo is not only associated with Valdevimbre; since the date mentioned, it has also carried the protected Tierra de León designation of origin. In this way, the cellar, vineyard, grape variety and regional origin can be understood as interconnected themes.

Nature

Almost half of the municipality of Valdevimbre belongs to the Natura 2000 network and the ZEPA ES0000365 Páramo Leonés special protection area for birds.

Valdevimbre has seasonal lagoons as well as springs and spring sites, some of which are of scenic interest to visitors.

The landscape therefore displays different connections with water and nature. The seasonal lagoons represent bodies of water that change over time, while springs and spring sites form distinct elements of the municipality. Together with the Natura 2000 network and the special protection area for birds, this creates a nature theme that clearly differs from the underground wine spaces.

For the purposes of selecting content, wine and nature can therefore be considered separately: the cellar winery and the offerings of Leyenda del Páramo belong to wine culture, while the lagoons, springs and spring sites belong to the landscape. Both focal points are present in Valdevimbre, but they place emphasis on different aspects.

Culture

The parish church of Valdevimbre has a square tower that was built under the influence of the Torre del Gallo of San Isidoro de León.

The parish church also houses a transitional form of the Romanesque statue of the Virgin Mary from the 13th century, known as the Virgen de las Angustias.

A remarkable 17th-century painting originating from the parish church of Valdevimbre is kept at the Diocesan Museum of León.

The parish church thus combines architectural history, medieval Marian art and a painting created at a later date. The square tower points to the influence of the Torre del Gallo of San Isidoro de León; the Virgen de las Angustias dates from the 13th century. The 17th-century painting is now kept at the Diocesan Museum of León, extending the cultural connection beyond the town center.
