At the Castillo de los Templarios in Ponferrada, stage C24 of the French Way of Saint James to Villafranca del Bierzo begins. Another perspective is offered by the Museo de la Radio “Luis del Olmo”, with one of the most complete collections of radio receivers in Spain.

Culture and history
According to the tradition associated with the Basílica de La Encina, the image of the Virgin Mary was discovered by workers who were cutting wood for Ponferrada’s Templar fortress at the end of the 12th century. According to the tradition, a temple was built at the site of this discovery.
The Virgen de la Encina of Ponferrada was declared the patron saint of the entire comarca of El Bierzo in 1908.
At the beginning of the 12th century, the Knights Templar reinforced and expanded the Castillo de los Templarios in order, among other things, to protect travellers making the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
The Castillo de los Templarios houses the Biblioteca Templaria and the Centro de Investigación y Estudios Históricos de Ponferrada, with almost 1,400 books.
La Fábrica de Luz. Museo de la Energía is located in a former thermal power station in Ponferrada that operated from 1920 to 1971.
The Museo de las Cofradías de Semana Santa presents the Passion experienced and re-enacted by the residents of Ponferrada over the past five centuries.
The cultural focuses can be clearly distinguished: medieval history takes centre stage at the Castillo, in the Biblioteca Templaria and at the research centre. The tradition associated with the Basílica de La Encina, on the other hand, leads to the history of the image of the Virgin Mary and the Virgen de la Encina. The radio, energy and Semana Santa museums present further distinct themes.

On its section through Ponferrada, the French Way of Saint James leads into the Parque de la Concordia.
The connection with the route therefore appears at two named points: stage C24 starts at the Castillo de los Templarios, while the section through Ponferrada leads into the Parque de la Concordia.

The wines of Bierzo have their own Denominación de Origen.
