Vegacervera: Hoces de Vegacervera and Cueva de Valporquero

Vegacervera highlights a striking limestone landscape and the caves of Valporquero. The Hoces de Vegacervera are a gorge carved by the River Torío into Mesozoic limestone, nearly 500 m deep and no more than 15 m wide at their base.

Nature

Along the middle course of the River Torío, the Hoces de Vegacervera lie within the municipalities of Vegacervera and Cármenes. Oak and beech forests grow on the slopes; the valley floor is home to a riverside forest of willows and poplars. The best way to access the Hayedo de Valporquero is from the car park at the entrance to the Cueva de Valporquero. The Hoces de Vegacervera have been designated as a protected natural area; this designation is based on Decree 94/2004 of 26 August, published in the B.O.C.y L. on 1 September. The tourist visit to the Cueva de Valporquero includes seven named chambers and galleries and takes place in groups accompanied by a cave guide. The Cueva de Valporquero is 3,498 m long. The climbing routes in the Hoces de Vegacervera range from ascents suitable for beginners to technically demanding lines. Festival and cuisine

Every year, Vegacervera hosts the Fiesta de la Cecina de Chivo; in 2023, the celebration was recognised as an event of provincial tourist importance. Getting there

The road journey from León to the Cueva de Valporquero follows the LE-311 to Matallana de Torío, then the LE-315 to Felmín, and finally a local road to the cave car park.
