Montealegre combines historic architecture, Roman mining and a gorge landscape. In 1993, the Junta of Castile and León declared the Church of San Juan de Montealegre an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category. The Galería Romana de Barranco del Góngora comprises Roman gold mines that were operated both through hydraulic open-pit mining and underground workings in a gold-bearing quartz deposit, probably during the first two centuries of our era.

History

At the entrance to Montealegre, a Roman milestone was converted into a fountain with clear, fresh water. Another granite Roman milestone stands in the area of El Castricho Square. The best-preserved part of the Church of San Juan de Montealegre is its chancel with three semicircular apses made of ashlar stone. One of the apses retains remnants of a mural with geometric motifs on a white background in black and ochre tones. The surviving architectural structures of the Church of San Juan de Montealegre date from the late Romanesque period at the beginning of the 13th century. A wooden statue of the saint was brought from the Monastery of San Juan to the Church of San Juan.

The historical and landscape themes can be weighed independently of one another. You can explore individual details in greater depth, consider routes as a focus in their own right and determine the order of your impressions yourself.

Nature and routes

The La Retuerta route leads to the ruins of the former Monastery of San Juan de Montealegre. The Cañones del Górgora can be reached on foot from Montealegre. The signposted Los Cañones del Górgora route starts in Montealegre and ends at a wooden bridge. It descends to the Arroyo del Mostruelo, which is also known as the Arroyo de la Górgora. Beyond the wooden bridge, the path can be dangerous. In the vicinity of Montealegre, the Cañones del Górgora form a narrow gorge carved out by water between large conglomerate formations.

You can consider different route and landscape themes separately when planning your trip. The balance between history, activity and nature remains a matter of your personal priorities.
