Luyego between landscape, culture and tradition

Luyego lies between dryland and the Vega, as well as a meadow landscape irrigated by the tributaries Duerna, Llamas and Espino. Located north of Teleno, the town offers various starting points for a journey combining landscape, culture, trails and nature. Landscape and nature

One route leads to the El Tejar Lagoon. Around the 1960s, it served as a place for making roof tiles, thereby combining a landscape destination with a historically craft-oriented detail. The El Teleno mountain is also located in the wider regional area around Luyego. The Cruz Mayor summit is likewise in this wider regional area, while the Pico Teleno mountain is located in the surroundings of Luyego.

The local nature can also be explored along guided trails. The Centro de Interpretación Micológico offers several guided mushroom routes through the local habitats. A mycology-focused guide provides instruction in good foraging practices. Culture and trails

The chapel Ermita de Nuestra Señora la Virgen de los Remedios is located in Luyego de Somoza. Fucochico preserves remains of Roman mining in Luyego de Somoza. Both places represent different historical traces: sacred tradition and the memory of mining meet here.

The official route to the Ermita de Santa Marina chapel leads to a building situated on a small plain beside the Duerna River. Another official route offers the opportunity to look out over Fucochico from above. The trail destinations therefore remain clearly distinct: one route leads to a chapel by the river, while the other opens up a view of the mining remains.

Festivals and sacred sites

The Romería de la Virgen de los Remedios takes place on the second Sunday in October. During the celebration, a procession accompanied by flute and tambourine passes through the village to the chapel; the faithful wear traditional Maragato costumes. The Fiesta de Santa Marina in Luyego takes place on the first Saturday in May. Inside the chapel, a statue of the Virgen de los Remedios dating from 1628 is kept.

The sacred surroundings include several churches in the wider regional area around Luyego: La Catedral de Santa María de Astorga, the Santuario de Ntra. Sra. de Castrotierra, the Iglesia de los Santos Justo y Pastor and the Mozarabic church of Santiago de Peñalba. These places complement the local chapels and festivals with further religious buildings, each with its own name and character.
