Discover Valdealcón: Churches, Historic Routes and the Esla Landscape

Valdealcón can be explored through its buildings, traditional route connections and the features of the Esla Valley. The village is home to the Iglesia de San Adrián, a cultural building and parish church dating from 1890. The Fuente de Valdealcón is a vaulted hydraulic structure dated, on the basis of stratigraphic and radiocarbon evidence, to the period between the Late Middle Ages and the beginning of the Early Modern period; it was built in clay soils in one of the numerous small valleys draining into the middle reaches of the Esla on the river’s right bank.

Culture

Historic Routes

At the Fuente de Valdealcón, the historic route is known as the “Camino de León”. The historic Camino de León ran from the Valdealcón area eastwards towards Villanofar and westwards towards Cerezales del Condado. Its western section was connected to a section of the Cañada Leonesa Occidental, specifically the Cañada Real de Boñar, which ran from Valladolid via León towards La Vecilla. The two directions and the additional connection make different historic route connections comparable without combining them into a single route.

Nature

The spring named Fuente Escusas is located in the area surrounding Valdealcón. Along its middle reaches, the Esla Valley has asymmetric terraces; the steps on the right bank are higher and offer better views of plains, floodplains and the opposite bank. Distinguishing between the spring, the valley landform and the riverbank directs attention to different scales of the landscape.
