Prado de la Guzpeña – Mining History, Nature and Trails

Prado de la Guzpeña combines specific trail destinations with an unusual mining history. The route through Robledo de la Guzpeña leads to the entrance of the “La Prometida” mine adit and runs alongside the “Chimenea de Prado”.

Trails and Landscape

The hike “Ascent to Peñacorada via Prado de la Guzpeña” begins in the village of Prado de la Guzpeña. The “Ruta BTT Puente Almuhey - Cistierna” mountain-bike route also passes through the village. A 5.9-kilometre route with a moderate difficulty level is designated as a linear stage from Prado de la Guzpeña to Puente Almuhey. The hike, mountain-bike route and linear stage therefore differ in terms of activity, route, starting point and specified distance.

Mining created an artificial lagoon beside the stream near the village of Prado de la Guzpeña. In addition to the lagoon, the “Zona de Recreo de Prado” offers barbecue facilities for meals cooked over a wood fire. Meadows, oak stands and hedgerows surround Prado de la Guzpeña and provide a habitat for the associated fauna, including the grey partridge. The water surface, open meadows and wooded areas thus form different landscape elements within the village.

Mining and Railway

The railway line running through Prado de la Guzpeña was built at the end of the 19th century as a result of the mining boom. The municipality of Prado de la Guzpeña’s more recent mining history lasted from 1874 to 1985; up to 800 people worked in coal extraction.

The “Chimenea de Prado” was part of a facility consisting of three chimneys and twelve ovens, built in 1960 to convert hard coal into coke. It stands near the mines and is 36 metres high. The railway line of the “El Hullero” also runs through Prado de la Guzpeña. Industrial remains, the railway connection and the temporally defined mining history thus form part of a shared historical theme.

Culture and History

The “Peña del Castro” lies between Robledo de la Guzpeña and Peñacorada. In pre-Roman times, it was the site of a hillfort belonging to the Astur people. In Prado de la Guzpeña, Saint Bartholomew’s Day is associated with 24 August. The historical content therefore ranges from the pre-Roman hillfort and more recent coal extraction to a feast day associated with the village.
