Toreno: Sierra de Gistredo, Sil and Rock Art
Toreno features a landscape of mountainous and upland terrain. From almost every point in the municipality, the highest peak of the Sierra de Gistredo is visible. The Sil River crosses the entire municipality from north to south.
Nature
Toreno has numerous easily accessible and well-marked routes for hiking and mountain biking. The La Viñuela route runs from Toreno to Villar de las Traviesas through old mines and returns through the valley of the Velasco River and along dense oak forests. Another route between Matarrosa and Librán includes a waterfall and rock art sites between San Pedro and Librán. From Santa Marina del Sil, a route leads to Bárcena Reservoir and Puente Cantarín; on the return journey, the Sil remains in view.
A 52-kilometre mountain-biking stage runs along paths and through places such as Igüeña, as well as through the area near Villar de las Traviesas. The 52 kilometres therefore provide a clearly defined distance around which you can structure your personal plans.
Culture
The sights in Toreno include the parish church of San Juan Bautista, the medieval Picota and the Casa de las Secretarias, which is a notable landmark as a representative manor house. The bridge over the Sil, described as Roman, is also a sight to see.
A Roman road takes you to Villar de las Traviesas, where you can visit the Ermita de San Lorenzo and the Iglesia de Santiago Apostol. A route north of Toreno leads to the place where the settlement originated: an ancient Celtic castro. The Castro de Toreno has been the subject of various studies.
The Buracón de los Mouros lies in the gorge of the Primout River near Librán and is regarded as the best-known and most significant rock art site in the area. The rock art complex of San Pedro Mallo near La Cueva includes schematic Bronze Age paintings and lies above the Camino Real to Librán. The rock art in the area consists predominantly of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic representations, as well as numerous engravings that are difficult to interpret.
Reservations for all sports courts at the Piscina Municipal de Toreno must be made in advance between 12:00 and 21:00 at the ticket office of Toreno's municipal swimming pools and/or by telephone on 602 245 680. In 2026, the regular market in Toreno will take place every other Tuesday in Plaza Mayor.
