Villablino: Mountain Landscapes and Culture in the Valle de Laciana

Villablino is the main town of the Valle de Laciana, surrounded by mountain peaks over 2,000 metres high. The River Sil runs through the valley, forming gorges and narrow passages in places.

Mountain Nature and Protected Habitats

The Valle de Laciana Biosphere Reserve encompasses Villablino and 14 other villages. The protected valley and the ZEPA bird protection area provide a habitat for the Cantabrian capercaillie, brown bears, roe deer and wild boar. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is of particular importance for the protection of the brown bear. A network of viewpoints in the Valle de Laciana makes it possible, with patience, to observe brown bears in their natural habitat.

The landscape around Rabanal de Arriba also shows how closely nature and mountain history are interconnected. The mixed forest there includes birch, oak and rowan trees and remains one of the last refuges of the Cantabrian capercaillie in this mountain landscape. In the Alto Sil regional natural and cultural area, the forests, the Cantabrian capercaillie, the brown bear and the traditional summer use of the high mountain pastures by the Brañeros also play an important role.

Hiking, Cycling and Winter Sports

The Vía Verde de Laciana is 12 kilometres long and connects valley landscapes with archaeological remains of mining. The Cueto Nidio route is a 15-kilometre circular hike that starts from Rabanal de Arriba in Villablino and ends there again. The “La Tierra del Oso” Trail Running Centre, supported by the Biosphere Reserve, offers hiking and running routes of varying lengths and elevation profiles that take the protection of endangered species into account.

The Camino Natural a Villaseca is fully accessible by bicycle and follows the former railway line between Villablino and Villaseca de Laciana. At Laciana Natura in Villablino, visitors can rent e-bikes or book a guided route accompanied by instructors. The Valle de Laciana-Leitariegos winter sports and mountain area offers skiing, snowboarding and various routes adapted to different users. It currently has 8 kilometres of ski runs and a snow park.

History, Geology and Architecture

Villablino offers several points of interest for culture enthusiasts. The Casona Sierra Pambley is a manor house built by the Sierra Pambley family in 1774. At the end of the 19th century, Francisco Fernández Blanco de Sierra Pambley founded the Sierra Pambley Mercantile and Agricultural School in Villablino and built a building for it next to his birthplace. The Iglesia de San Miguel is considered an important example of rural Romanesque architecture.

The Aula Geológica de Robles houses a large collection of fossils, particularly from the Carboniferous period, as well as minerals. The Centro del Urogallo in Caboalles de Arriba near Villablino presents the geology, palaeontology and habitats of the Alto Sil, from the high mountain landscape to the valley floors. In the Alto Sil regional natural and cultural area, the forests, the Cantabrian capercaillie, the brown bear and the traditional summer use of the high mountain pastures also play an important role.

Archaeological traces complete this picture. La Zamora is one of three pre-Roman hillforts that can be visited in Laciana. The Castro de La Muela in Rioscuro dates back to the Second Iron Age and represents the Asturian settlement history of livestock farming and subsistence agriculture. This makes it possible to combine the natural environment, mining history and older settlement traditions without limiting an excursion to just one theme.

Festivals and Flavours of the Mountain Region

Local traditions are particularly vividly showcased at La Feriona in Villablino. The livestock fair includes exhibitions of cows, horses, mastiff dogs and chickens, as well as numerous market stalls. It is associated with the tradition of eating octopus on 12 October. Traditional desserts from the Laciana mountain region include fisuelos, pionono or brazo de gitano, and borrachines.

In August, the Fiesta de la Manteiga in Sosas combines a visit to La Popular, the historic hydraulic dairy now used as a museum, with demonstrations of former butter-making techniques and regional festivities.
