Nature

Mirador Picón 360º is located in Ocero and Vega de Espinareda and offers views across the entire El Bierzo region as well as parts of Galicia and Asturias. Its access trail is 6.5 km long, calculated for the return journey, has a gradient of 5 to 8 percent and is considered easy for hikers.

Trails

The Ruta de los Cortines is a 13 km circular route connecting Sancedo and Ocero and focusing on the restoration of 14 Cortines. The Cortines of the Ruta de los Cortines in Sancedo and Ocero are circular stone structures traditionally used to protect beehives from bears. The Senda del Hierro is a 6 km trail for cyclists and hikers, where a mining complex with six iron and gold mines carved into the rock can be visited; these mines have been exploited since antiquity. Another 3 km route along a stream connects the iron mines with several Cortines.

For your planning, you can compare the trails side by side by length, activity and theme. Exercise, views and traces of mining form different focal points. The attributes can be weighted separately, allowing different day-trip ideas to stand side by side without equating one route with another.

Culture and History

The parish church of Santa Ana in Ocero is comprehensively protected. The Negrillo de Santa Ana de Ocero is part of the Bierzo route of carved trees. The former schools of Ocero are a beautiful rectangular masonry building with dressed-stone corners and entrance porches on both sides. In the Rigo Valley in Ocero there are five adits of former iron-ore mines that operated between 1957 and 1959. Vallelongo I is a cheese-maturing facility in a converted former iron mine in Ocero.

The cultural traces shift perspectives between protection, former use, traditional construction methods and regional context. You can read these themes separately or consider them side by side as different reasons for planning a day out, depending on whether you are more interested in buildings, crafts or industrial history.

When choosing holiday accommodation in Ocero, you can compare travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the respective offer page. In making this choice, hiking trails, mining, the townscape and expansive views can be weighted differently depending on your day-trip idea.
