Orbaneja Riopico – Camino de Santiago, Churches and Nature

The Camino Francés passes through Orbaneja de Ríopico. The Camino de Santiago, which is protected as a historic site, also runs through the centre of Orbaneja Riopico. The alternative route of the Camino de Santiago through Orbaneja Riopico follows the local BU-7011-V road, sharing the carriageway with road traffic there.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Millán Abad is under comprehensive protection and was built in the 16th century. It is a building with a rectangular, single-nave floor plan divided into five sections. A slightly pointed side portal is protected by an enclosed portico built in 1877. The church also has a square bell tower dating from the 17th century. Inside is a depiction of San Roque dressed as a pilgrim. Above Orbaneja Riopico, the Iglesia de San Millán Abad overlooks the valley of the Río Pico.

The Ermita de la Inmaculada Concepción is a small religious stone building on a hill near the town centre. It was built in 1588 by a local noble family. The chapel is under comprehensive protection and is classified as a BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural, Property of Cultural Interest). Its rectangular floor plan is made of stone; it also features a round-arched portal and a bell gable with a triangular pediment and three decorative pinnacles. Inside is a Baroque altarpiece with a depiction of the Immaculate Conception.

The local festival dates also add their own distinctive touches: the festival in honour of San Millán Abad is scheduled for the last weekend in May, while the celebration in honour of the Virgen del Carmen takes place on 16 July.

The cultural impressions are therefore spread across different forms: the older architectural history of the Iglesia de San Millán Abad is followed by the Baroque features of the Ermita de la Inmaculada Concepción and the two celebrations set for particular times of the year. Nature

The Sendero de los Bodones / PRC-BU 127 runs through extensive Rebollar forests near the city of Burgos.
