Discover Burgos: City Walls, Monasteries and the Way of St. James

Burgos is a destination where urban history, monastic culture, museums, pilgrimage routes and festival traditions come together in a variety of discoveries. Particularly striking is the Paseo de los Cubos, which preserves the longest surviving section of Burgos’s city walls.

Culture

The Museum of Human Evolution offers 9,000 m² of exhibition space. On display are original fossils of Homo antecessor as well as the skull known as “Miguelón”. The exhibition thus combines a spacious presentation area with two specifically named testimonies to human development.

On 1 June 1187, King Alfonso VIII founded the Monastery of Santa María la Real de las Huelgas as a Cistercian monastery. It is the most important female Cistercian monastery in Spain and the mother monastery of all Cistercian monasteries founded in the Crown of Castile.

Santa María la Real de las Huelgas includes a Mudéjar church, parts of which have been preserved in the present-day Chapel of the Assumption, as well as the adjacent Romanesque cloister known as “Las Claustrillas”. The Museum of Medieval Textiles is located in the monastery’s former granary. It displays the banner of Las Navas de Tolosa, as well as textiles and garments from the tombs of kings, queens and members of the royal family.

Cityscape

The Mirador del Castillo offers an exceptional view of the old walled complex and the city of Burgos. The viewpoint directs attention both to the historic architectural ensemble and to the urban space.

The Mudéjar arch Arco de San Martín marks the exit from the former walled city of Burgos. Its historical period remains part of its significance.

Pilgrimage Route and Sightseeing

The Way of St. James leads from Gamonal into the historic centre of Burgos. A guided tour of Burgos Cathedral is led by official tourism guides and lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes.
