Culture

Bisjueces is home to the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, a building that was listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) heritage site in 1991.

Its 17th-century Renaissance portico shelters a Renaissance portal with seated statues of the judges of Castile on both sides of the door. On the PRC-BU 230 Sendas del Rebollarejo hiking trail, the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista in Bisjueces, with its Renaissance portal, takes center stage.

Several houses bearing coats of arms have been preserved in Bisjueces. According to local tradition, the village is near the place where the judges of Castile, Nuño Rasura and Laín Calvo, once dispensed justice. Bisjueces also preserves interesting examples of traditional rural architecture.

The village developed at a crossroads of the old road from Medina de Pomar via Villarías to the Hocinos, before the route climbed to the Castilian highlands along the old Calzada de El Almiñé.

The cultural references range from individual architectural details to the traditional history of the village. You can consider these aspects independently and assign them weight according to your own interests.

Landscape

The Fuente Cubillo stream flows through Bisjueces; it is a left-bank tributary of the Nela. The Sierra de la Tesla lies in the vicinity of Bisjueces and shapes its natural mountain scenery. Bisjueces is located east of the Valdelugaña Valley; the natural surroundings offer routes for walking and appreciating the landscape.

The stream, the mountain scenery and the routes for appreciating the landscape describe different scales. For your own planning, you can weigh a specific natural feature and a broader landscape area separately.

The length of a route describes its extent, while several place names make its course easier to follow. You can weigh these differences side by side when planning your own trip.

PRC-BU 231 Senda de la Rad is a hiking trail and forms part of the approved trail network of the Federación de Deportes de Montaña, Escalada y Senderismo de Castilla y León (FDMESCYL). It passes through Bisjueces, La Aldea and Barruelo and meets PRC-BU 230 Sendas del Rebollarejo in Bisjueces.
