Guzmán: Castle Hill, Churches and Wine Cellars
Guzmán lies on the highest plateaus rising from the Duero Valley. Panoramic views open up from the castle hill, which also serves as a natural lookout over the river landscape. There are around 100 underground wine cellars on this castle hill. Those wishing to explore the town from different perspectives can consider the landscape, views and wine cellars separately. The location on the plateaus, the view over the river landscape and the underground wine cellars thus provide three distinct ways of experiencing the town. Depending on your interests, the castle hill can be appreciated for its landscape, its views or its cellar complexes.
Culture and History
Inside the Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista, Renaissance design can be seen alongside Baroque finishes; the church also houses interesting works of art. The construction of this house of worship was financed by the people of Guzmán, with all residents contributing.
Construction of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Fuente began in 1745. Guzmán is considered one of the original ancestral seats from which the Castilian high nobility emerged. The paternal family of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, founder of the Order of Preachers, came from this villa.
A fortification once stood on Guzmán’s castle hill; today, only its foundations remain. At the Castillo de Guzmán, only sections of individual walls of archaeological interest are visible.
Those combining several interests can consider interior art, the castle hill, archaeological wall remains and wine cellars as distinct cultural focal points. Each topic has its own historical or landscape-related connection. Religious buildings, family history and the surviving traces of the fortification reveal different aspects of the town’s history without converging on a single historical site.
Festivals and Traditions
In Guzmán, festivals in honour of San Juan Bautista are celebrated on 24 June. In September, festivals in honour of the Virgen de la Fuente are also held on the first Sunday after 8 September.
During the second edition of the historical re-enactment “El origen de Guzmán”, the event day ended at 9:30 p.m. with a Celtic concert by Bardos y Druidas. The event combined history, cultural heritage and public participation.
For personal planning, the scheduled event dates and the location-specific themes related to architectural history, landscape and cultural heritage can be considered separately. The two festival dates fall at different times of the year, while the historical re-enactment additionally had a specifically stated end to the day featuring music. The occasions described therefore differ in date, purpose and programme.
Architectural Heritage
The Palacio de Guzmán in Pedrosa De Duero follows the classical building type known as the “palacio Austria”, which gained widespread acceptance in the 16th and 17th centuries. An example from Pedrosa de Duero thus adds a classical building type and a time frame covering the 16th and 17th centuries to the architectural history. This perspective extends beyond the religious buildings and fortification remains of Guzmán.
