San Adrián: Church, Sendero Minero and Mining History

San Adrián de Juarros can be discovered through religious art, evidence of rural everyday life and the traces of coal mining. The Sendero Minero starts in San Adrián de Juarros, is signposted, 10 kilometres long and laid out as a circular route marked P.R.C. BU56. At the edge of the village, next to the start of the trail, there is a visitor reception centre.

Culture and History

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built between the 15th and 16th centuries in the Gothic-Renaissance style. Its main altarpiece is Baroque, dates from 1699 and was created by José del Amo and Ventura Fernández. Architectural details include ashlar walls made from the stone characteristic of Juarros; the furnishings include a gilded and polychromed pinewood statue of Saint Adrian.

A commemorative plaque marks the house in San Adrián de Juarros where the Marianist educator Father Domingo Lázaro (1877–1935), a prominent figure in Marianist education in Spain, was born. San Adrián de Juarros also has a recently restored cattle crush for restraining and shoeing livestock. A communal washhouse is connected with the village’s social heritage.

Mining History

Coal mining in the San Adrián de Juarros area began in 1841 and continued until 1970. The Sendero Minero leads to nine former coal mines and a lime kiln. The greatest concentration of mines is located between Brieva de Juarros and San Adrián de Juarros.

The specific route length and the clearly defined period of mining provide different points of reference. A route can be measured by its length, while a historical chapter can be defined by its beginning and end.

Landscape

The Sendero Minero passes through oak and pine forests typical of the Juarros landscape. The Mirador del Sauce lies between San Adrián de Juarros and Brieva de Juarros and offers views of the landscape shaped by the peaks of the Sierra, including Pico San Millán.
