Modúbar de San Cibrián: Valley, Trails and Romanesque Traces

Nature and landscape

The Fuente de los Mártires lies about 500 metres north of Modúbar de San Cibrián. It is the source of the Viejo or Modúbar River and forms a small lagoon that collects water from the surrounding plateau. The remains of an old grain mill can be seen next to the spring. After the settlement was moved to its new location in the 11th century, the spring was regularly used to supply drinking water.

Trails

Four hiking routes have been established in Modúbar de San Cibrián. The Ruta del Destierro of the Camino del Cid ends in Modúbar de San Cibrián with Stage 2, which comes from Burgos; Stage 3 to Covarrubias begins there. Culture and history

The present-day parish church of San Pedro de Antioquía, also known as the Cátedra de San Pedro, was built in the second half of the 16th century over the former monastery of Santa María. The church preserves an 11th-century Romanesque tower with a spiral staircase leading to the Renaissance bell tower. The former monastery of San Martín was founded in 944 and housed 34 monks in 975.

Further traces can be found in the excavated remains of the chapel of San Cornelio and San Ciprián, dating from the 11th to the 13th century. Two anthropomorphic sarcophagi are currently on display in Modúbar de San Cibrián. Various excavation campaigns uncovered finds dating from the Copper Age to the Middle Ages, as well as burials of women and children in the area around the head end.

Festivals

The feast of the Cátedra de San Pedro de Antioquía on 22 February includes a solemn Mass. The feast of the Virgen del Rosario on the first Sunday in October includes a procession during which people dance in honour of the Virgin.
