Villanueva de Argaño – Camino de Santiago and holiday apartment

Villanueva de Argaño combines Roman history, sacred architecture and a section of the Vía Aquitania. A Roman milestone dating from around 58 AD was discovered here. It belonged to a Roman road that led as far as Astorga and, as a Neronian milestone on the Via Ab Asturica Burdigalam, is evidence of this ancient connection.

History and sacred architecture

The Iglesia de Villanueva de Argaño is a late Gothic parish church. Its portal opens onto the south side and is late Romanesque in style. The church is listed in the heritage register of the Province of Burgos.

The place name also refers to a religious memorial setting. In the historical tradition of the province, “Argaño” is associated with a Marian shrine in the landscape known as “Soto de Argaño”. Fray Juan de la Miseria stayed for some time at the Santuario de la Virgen de Argaño and built the small house adjoining the hermitage.

Vía Aquitania and the Camino de Santiago

Castilla y León approved the inclusion of the Vía Aquitania as a new Historic Camino de Santiago. On its route from Burgos to Sasamón, it passes through Villanueva de Argaño. The initiators of the Vía Aquitania propose a 12.56-kilometre stage from Villanueva de Argaño to Sasamón.

For purposes of thematic classification, two different details stand side by side: inclusion as a Historic Camino de Santiago describes the route’s status, while the proposed stage represents a specific section between two places. Both perspectives belong to the Vía Aquitania, but they do not serve the same function in travel planning.

Sacred memorial sites

The Ermita del Santo Cristo de los Buenos Temporales houses a 17th-century bust of Christ and two wooden funerary urns.

Festivals and local traditions

Villanueva de Argaño’s most important patronal festival is the Patrocinio de San José. This festival includes a procession in honour of Saint Joseph.

The local festival calendar also includes several separate dates and customs. For years, the anniversary of the “Club sin fondos” has been celebrated on the first Saturday in September. The popular Matanza festival takes place on Holy Saturday. A pinchos competition traditionally marks the conclusion of the local festivities.
