The area around Cerro del Castillo is home to the traditional wine-cellar district of Gumiel del Mercado. The traditional wine cellars and presses form a significant and extensive ensemble there: a total of 106 wine cellars and 69 presses have been documented and catalogued. Beneath the ground, a network of wine cellars approximately 3 kilometres long extends throughout the area. The landscape value of this area is intended to be preserved.

Culture and History

The Church of Santa María la Mayor is a 15th-century Gothic church with three naves. The church’s main altar dates from the late 17th century and includes paintings by Bartolomé Pérez de la Dehesa. A local legend recounts that, during their retreat from central Spain in the final days of May 1813, French soldiers attempted to steal the image of Santa María la Mayor. They left it behind after their carriage became stuck while crossing the river.

The tower of the Church of San Pedro Apóstol is fitted with machicolations, dates from the first third of the 15th century and is considered one of the finest examples of the fortification of a late-medieval church. A cross is carved into one of the battlements; it forms part of the coat of arms of Juan Sánchez as well as the coat of arms of the municipal council of Gumiel del Mercado. Part of the wall and two gates remain from the former town wall of Gumiel del Mercado.

The sacred buildings, the local legend and the surviving wall remains offer different focal points for discovering the history of the town, without limiting the experience to a single building.
