Villafría is a destination for travellers who do not want to consider culture, routes and nature separately. Culture and History

The parish church of San Esteban was mentioned in 931 as being dependent on the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña. It was rebuilt in the 16th century. Today, it is a Renaissance church with three naves and a noble chapel from the 17th century.

The Baroque high altar was created in 1710 and is attributed to Lorenzo Rivas and Domingo Elcarreta. It is dedicated to Saint Stephen. When preparing independently, you can classify the church as a cultural topic separately from the route and landscape information.

Routes

The Camino Francés runs through Villafría. In the town, the Ruta Alavesa joined the Camino Francés. Both references point to different historic route connections that can be considered separately.

When choosing the Villafría variant, the route continues along a road that shortly afterwards joins the N-I. The former railway line from Villafría to Monterrubio de la Demanda was converted into a Vía Verde between 1998 and 2003.

Nature

The Bosque de Villafría is the last native forest in the municipality of Burgos. The dominant tree species are the Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea) and the holm oak (Quercus ilex).

The forest is fenced around its entire perimeter to facilitate its preservation. For your planning, you can distinguish the tree species and fencing as separate aspects of the landscape.
